Oberammergau is a small town in Bavaria, Germany, located on the Ammer River, in the popular ski district of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It is known across the world for its woodcarvers and woodcarvings, for its NATO School, and for the mounting of outdoor Passion Plays, a centuries old tradition begun in the 1600s. The town’s pretty red rooftops are seen from a summer meadow looking towards the steep cliffs of the Kofel mountain and the winter ski slopes and ski lifts.
